IĞDIR - Iğdır Municipality Co-mayor Şaziye Önder, who was arrested and suspended from her duty on the grounds that she participated in the human shield action against the operations launched in 2011, said they would continue their struggle by stating that there had no legal aspects of the arrests for women's co-mayors for about two years.

Iğdır Municipality Co-mayor Şaziye Önder, who was arrested on October 9, 2015 on the grounds that she participated in the human shield action in order to prevent the military operations launched in 2011, was discharged after being held in the prison for seven months. Şaziye was suspended from her duty while she was in prison. Şaziye evaluated the suspension of co-mayors, in particular female co-mayors, for over a year and said the oppression on female co-mayors continued for a very long time.

‘Suspension period is 3 months’

Şaziye indicated that the suspension period is three months and continued, “If a case hasn’t been opened against the person for three months, the person has to be returned to duty again. Our lawyers objected to the decision; however, we were suspended despite the objection. Suspended us from our duty was before the KHK decrees then this situation has become legal with the KHK decrees. If there is an investigation against a person, this person has been suspended from duty.”

Şaziye informed that the KHK (Statutory Decree) is unconstitutional and it is valid for certain period. Şaziye said, “But now, unfortunately, we are governed by the KHK and a certain presidency. We are experiencing all unlawfulness period. There is really nothing left in the name of law.”

Şaziye underlined that the ongoing detentions, oppressions and arrests are carried out mostly on women and women have been tried to be prevented to act with their own will. Şaziye said, “They don’t want the women to be in municipalities. In the past, there was a woman in municipal council or there wasn’t one. But now, the women have the power to determine the politics. Women solve women’s problems and make the women to be visible.”
