ADANA –Women’s Organizations Union member Sema Örgün said the trustee appointments to municipalities governed by the DBP, notable for with their co-mayor system and women’s projects, are the work of the unfree male mindset.

On the heels of the appointment of trustees to many municipalities in Kurdistan, many women’s organizations have been closed. Society for the Promotion of Human Values Chairwoman Berrin Uğurlu emphasized that all opposition groups should take responsibility regarding the closing the women’s organizations and the trustee appointments. Berrin underlined that voices should be raised, not kept silent, in the current environment of increasing pressure, or many other organizations will be closed.

Women, in particular, shouldn’t ignore the closing of the women’s organization, stated Berrin, who continued: “This situation is unacceptable. Hurting women’s organizations means hurting all women. Today, trustees have closed organizations in Kurdish cities; however, this will reflect badly on women in the West. We may have different thoughts, but the common denominator is women’s struggle. The only solution is to fight together without dissociating.”

Izmir Women’s Organizations Union member Sema Örgün emphasized the importance of not only women’s freedom, but also men’s freedom, and pointed out that the main problem is one of men’s lack of independence. Sema said the trustees are the work of an unfree male mindset. She pointed out the importance of the co-mayor system and said, “The co-mayor system smooths the way for women to take part in politics. In this sense, our support is in practice. The HDP has this practice, and we suggest that other parties move to the co-chair/co-mayor system. We know which parties don’t give any places to women on their lists."
