NEWS CENTER - As soldiers continue to die in the war fomented by Turkey's government, women's rage against war is growing.
As war continues in Turkey, women have raised their voices against the jingoistic discourse that sends their children to death. At military funerals, mothers of slain soldiers are expected to say "condolences to the homeland" in a display of their patriotism at such funerals. In cities like Van and Bursa, women have begun to react angrily to this expectation and to the jingoistic discourse of the reigning AKP.
A text circulating on social media under the name "nameless mother" has summarized the anger of many women. "As a woman, the sentence I hate the most is 'condolences to the homeland,'" begins the text, which calls for women to wake up and object to war.
"Why should there be condolences for this? Let's say I should carry [a child] in my belly for nine months; I coddle him with utmost care. I can't get enough of his smell, his life. I wait for him night and day. I can't harm a hair on his head," wrote the nameless mother. "Then I should sacrifice him to some roads on a hill, to the tyrannical politics of people who know nothing of humanity! The reason? Personal gain, a lack of any interest in humanity.
"For years, they made us memorize it; for years they took life away from us:: 'condolences to the homeland?' Why should there be condolences?" wrote the woman.
