WAN - Yesterday, in Van, women journalists honored Deniz Fırat--a Kurdish journalist who lost her life filming Daesh attacks--on the first anniversary of her death at the hands of Daesh.
On August 8, 2014, Deniz Fırat was struck by a piece of shrapnel as she filmed Daesh's attack on the Maxmur refugee camp in the Federal Kurdistan Region. Yesterday, journalists organized a trip to her grave in her native village of Hangedik (Xece Xatun) to honor her.
"Deniz Fırat was doing journalism in order to be the voice of all women against the rapist Daesh gangs," said Mizgin Tabu, a reporter for JINHA, speaking at the ceremony. Deniz lived and worked in the Maxmur refugee camp, where she put out a local newspaper along with the camp youth. She also sent news to television channels and news agencies from areas unreached by most journalists.
Mizgin promised that Kurdish women journalists would continue Deniz's work. The visitors left carnations on Deniz' grave and wished their condolences to her family.
