NEWS CENTER - After the death of a young woman after being raped by her brother, Turkey's mainstream media has used the language of "shame" to perpetuate misogyny.

In Turkey, 22-year-old Aysun Altay was found dead, allegedly having killed herself after having been raped by her older brother. The newspaper Akşam ran Aysun's death as front-page news yesterday, with the headline "defeated by shame." The article once again reinforced the perception that a woman who is raped should naturally feel shame and blame herself.

Akşam is owned by EthemSancak (a businessman known for his close ties with and adoration for Turkish President RecepTayyipErdoğan).
