ISTANBUL - The Peace Bloc, a coalition of political and civil society groups in Turkey, has called a peace march for Istanbul on Sunday.
On Monday, in Suruç, Turkey, a bombing targeted a group of socialist youth planning to travel to the city of Kobanê (in the Rojava autonomous region) to rebuild the city. 32 died in the attack, which has raised fears of war in Turkey.
"We know that all of Turkey bears the weight of these bodies," said Filiz Kerestecioğlu, Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) representative for Istanbul, speaking at a meeting to announce the planned peace march. "We believe that peace is in our hands." The Peace Bloc was founded by a range of civil society and political organizations in Turkey to organize a united front against a possible war.
Filiz warned that the people of Turkey saw the devastation of war every day from the conditions of the Syrians who have had to flee their country to Turkey. She said that the Peace Bloc would not tolerate a policy of war in Syria.
The march will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday in Istanbul.
