NEWS CENTER - In Texas, Sandra Bland, a 28-year-old black woman and activist, was found dead in her cell after being brutally arrested.

28-year-old Sandra Bland had recently gotten a job in Houston, Texas as a university outreach officer. On Friday, July 10, Sandra was pulled over by police, allegedly for not signaling as she changed lanes. A video shows the police officer violently arresting Sandra, pinning her to the ground with his knees. During the arrest, Sandra said that her head was slammed into the ground and she lost her hearing.

When Sandra called her family from jail, she said she did not know why she had been arrested. She was in extreme pain, possibly with a broken arm, and could not feel her arm. Sandra, far away from her family in Chicago, asked for help getting out of jail. Police held Sandra for three days, claiming she had kicked the officer. Sandra was found dead in her cell on Monday.

Family and friends say it is inconceivable that Sandra would kill herself, as police have claimed. Sandra had recently been hired for a promising job at Prairie A&M University, her own alma mater. She had taken an active part in the Black Lives Matter movement and had produced videos about racism and police violence.

It has emerged that the sheriff involved in Sandra's death had been previously fired for racist behavior and anger problems.
