NEWS CENTER - In Malawi, where 50% of girls are married before they turn 18, traditional leader Inkosi Kachindamoto has stopped 330 child marriages in the region she rules.
Child marriage was outlawed in Malawi in February, but the practice continues. In the Dedza region of the country, Inkosi Kachindamoto--a leader of the Ngoni people--has canceled 330 child marriages in her territory, according to the newspaper Nyasa Times. Inkosi has suspended village heads who gave permission to child marriage and warns that the policy will continue until the practice is eradicated.
"I don't want youthful marriages; they must go to school," said Inkosi. "We have now set our own bylaws to govern everybody within my area when it comes to marriages, and we will leave no sacred cow."
