NEWS CENTER - The people of Greece have voted "no" on European creditors' proposals and on further austerity policies in a historic referendum.
With a 60% majority, the "no" vote has won overwhelmingly at the polls in Greece. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, speaking as initial results came out, said that the Greek people had refused to give in to threats and that democracy had won.
Voting started at 7 a.m. yesterday. 65% of registered voters voted in the referendum on two linked proposals, brought to Greece by its creditors in the IMF and EU, that would continue austerity policies in Greece. As the polls closed yesterday at 7 p.m., "no" quickly emerged as the winning vote.
Celebrations have continued in Athens' Syntagma Square.
