QAMIŞLO – Women at the Academy of Science and Thought in the city of Qamişlo, Rojava say that education is the foundation of revolution.

Women in Qamişlo, a city located in the Cizîrê Canton of the autonomous Rojava region of Syria, have started women-specific educational programs at the Academy of Science and Thought. The academy initially took six months to get off the ground, according to academy director Feryal Şole. Now, they have started all women’s activites to help educate women in Rojava. The academy is preparing for its next session of classes.

“For us, as women, education is more valuable than bread or water,” said NGO worker Xebat Sifo, commenting on the academy’s work. She said that women in struggle across Rojava saw their self-improvement as revenge on rapist Daesh marauders. “For us, education is one of the greatest wars.”
