WAN – In a rare development in Turkey, where perpetrators of femicide are frequently given "sentence reductions for good behavior," femicide perpetrator Bayram Fırtına has received life in prison for killing Büşra Çiftçi.
Büşra Çiftçi was killed in the Erciş area of Turkey's eastern Van province in December 2014. She had been married for three months. Bayram Fırtına was convicted of the killing today based on evidence found in his home and eyewitness testimony.
In Turkey, women's groups have strongly protested the fact that many killers of women are issued sentence reductions for good behavior—from "wearing a tie" to "looking apologetic"—at a high rate. Bayram has received a life sentence for the crime in a rare development.
