AMED – The Kurdish women's group Congress of Free Women (KJA)has stated that the re-starting of peace negotiations in Turkey must ensure PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan’s freedom and security.
After its Amed (Diyarbakır) meeting on June 20, the Permanent Council of the women's organization released a statement recommending the immediate restarting of the negotiations process to resolve the Kurdish question in Turkey. The group noted that jailed PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s freedom and security is vital, as he is the chief negotiator in the process.
The KJA also commented on the HDP's victory in the recent Turkish election, calling it the peoples' endorsement of the idea of a democratic nation for Turkey. They said that the path to democracy and freedom can only be paved through women’s participation in politics, as in the HDP, which follows a gender egalitarian policy. They described the high level of women’s election into the Parliament as a product of the labor of the women’s movement.
The KJA also praised the revolutionary initiatives of radical democracy that enabled the liberation of Girê Spî (Tel Abyad) in Syria, noting that the victory would have a lasting impact on Turkey and the rest of the Middle East. The KJA described the Rojava women’s revolution as its source of morale, hope, and strength.
