GIRÊ SPÎ – Since YPJ/YPG forces liberated the city of Girê Spî (Tel Abyad) from Daesh occupation, women across the city are happy to see the end of the gang's oppressive reign.

JINHA went door-to-door in the city of Girê Spî to speak to the women of the city about their thoughts on the YPJ/YPG victory, which pushed Daesh gangs out of the city after a two-year occupation. While most women were reluctant to have their pictures taken, they reported that they could finally live in peace after two years of occupation.Daesh has long used Girê Spî, which lies along the Turkish border, as a key base for their activity in Syria and Rojava.

Girê Spî resident Saliha Mahmu Cebir has looked after her grandchildren since Daesh gang members killed her son for aiding the YPG during the war over the city of Kobanê, just west of the city.

"The Daesh gangs mercilessly killed many innocent civilians," said Saliha. "They forced women to wear long black veils, and women couldn't go outside without a man. We lived like hostages." She said women were stoned on the very suspicion that they had an unpermitted relationship with a man.If a stranger saw a woman's face, the gang member forced her own husband to punish her. Gang members also forbade girls from going to school in the city.

Saliha said she and the women of Girê Spî lived much more freely now that the city was free of Daesh occupation.
