ISTANBUL - The policeman who pepper sprayed academic Ceyda Sungur, the "woman in red" made famous in a photograph from the Gezi Park protests, was sentenced to planting 600 trees.
During Gezi Park protests, police officer Fatih Zengin pepper sprayed Ceyda Sungur at close range. He had been sentenced to 20 months in prison for the police brutality. The court suspended the punishment and instead sentenced him to plant 600 trees.
Fatih Zengin will be responsible for the young trees for six months, but the site for the trees to be planted on hasn't been decided yet by the court.
The police office pepper sprayed Ceyda Sungue on May 28, 2013 during an attack on those trying to defend Gezi Park from demolition. The photograph of the "woman in red" became an early icon of the Gezi Park protests.
