NEWS CENTER – Syriza MP Sia Anagnostopoulou, congratulating the HDP on their electoral victory in Turkey, called the party's success a source of hope for the entire region.

Sia noted that the attacks by the AKP and President Erdoğan made it extremely difficult for the HDP to pass Turkey's high electoral threshold. In the end, she said, the HDP prevailed. "I am very happy that the people of Turkey decided to support a party which is not only pro-Kurdish party, but a party of all the peoples of Turkey," she said. "And for Syriza, in a country so near to Greece, we now have a party like HDP—this is a hope for all the region and for us as Syriza."

Sia noted that there were great differences between the HDP and Syriza, but they shared a commitment to being parties of those who are othered—whether through Syriza's new law to extend citizenship to migrants or the HDP's policy of pluralism.

"It's not only a struggle against neoliberal ideology for the HDP and Syriza," she said. "It's a struggle for the emancipation of the society. This emancipation means accepting the other and otherness. For the HDP, that means they make the other visible in the public sphere—Kurds, Armenians, Greeks, homosexuals and women."

The HDP's policies of quotas for women and LGBTI people, said Sia, were key to bringing these issues into political discussion in Turkey. She congratulated the HDP for their success in making women visible in the public sphere, a hopeful development for the entire Middle East.
