NEWS CENTER – The UN's new report on violence against LGBTI people says that such violence is widespread and impunity is high around the world.
In the report, released to coincide with Pride Month, the UN says that no part of the world is immune from frequently grotesque and brutal violence against LGBTI people.
From 2008 to 2014, at least 1,612 trans people were killed around the world; that's one trans murder every two days, according to the report. Transphobic and homophobic hate crimes are widespread in developed and developing countries, such as the U.S., where anti-LGBTI hate crimes rank second in the hate crimes reported. The report pointed to high rates of impunity for such crimes.
Meanwhile, police and the state often directly persecute LGBTI people around the world. There are laws on the books in 76 countries criminalizing LGBTI identity and eight countries that prescribe the death penalty for gay acts.
The report presented some meager gains in the situation for LGBTI people, at least on the level of legal rights. Six countries have decriminalized LGBTI identities and acts over the last five years.
