SERÊKANIYÊ – Women's organizations in the Rojava city of Serêkaniyê have formed 38 women's communes over the last few months, according to representatives from women's movement umbrella group Yekîtiya Star.
The initiative to organize the women of Serêkaniyê and its surrounding villages into communes started seven months ago. Through seven months of meetings and planning with local women, the result has been 38 new women's communes—the most recent stage in the organizing of the Rojava women's revolution.
"With the communes, we aimed to develop social life and women's organization," said Intizar Melke, a Yekîtiya Star director. Intîzar is a member of the Arab community of Rojava. She has served on the subcommittees of a number of such communes, which aim to build a peaceful and democratic life in economic and social areas.
Social reconciliation committees aim to solve problems between citizens. Finally, finance committees are becoming more active in the economic activities of the communes. Intizar says that the Kurdish language and education movement organization TZP is assisting the women's communes in organizing educational programs.
The next organizing project on the horizon after women's communes will be women's assemblies.
