NEWS CENTER – When the short-lived Kurdish state the Mahabad Republic was formed in 1946, one of its first leading lights was Misri Xusrewi, who lost her life on Saturday at the age of 86.
The Mahabad Republic, which lasted around a year, was founded in 1946 in the part of Kurdistan that is now in Iran. Misri Xusrewi was one of the leading intellectual forces of the young republic, the first and last independent Kurdish state in the modern era. She worked as a Kurdish language and literature teacher in the city of Bokan. The people of the republic came to know Misri, born in 1929, as "Ms. Misri Xusrewi."
After the fall of the Mahabad Republic, Misri Xusrewi emigrated to Southern Kurdistan (in Iraq). The Iraqi state under Nuri al-Said executed her husband, Muhammed Kudsi, along with three of his friends. Misri returned to Bokan after the execution. She dedicated her life to researching Kurdish literature.
