AMED – A crowd of thousands laid YPJ fighter Hacire Kurt (nom de guerre Newal Farqin) to rest in the main Kurdish city of Diyarbakır yesterday.

The body of the YPJ (Women's Protection Units) fighter Hacire Kurt (nom de guerre Newal Farqin) was laid to rest in the southeastern city of Diyarbakır yesterday following a massive ceremony. Thousands of people, including candidates from the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), laid to rest the YPJ fighter, who lost her life fighting Daesh forces in the town of Mebruka, near Hesekê in Rojava.

Hacire's death was one in a spate of funerals for four other YPG/YPJ fighters who lost their lives in the same clash. After women led the funeral march and bore Hacire's coffin to its final resting place, they left roses on her grave.

"The struggle of my elder sister and her comrades will always continue," said her brother, Ömer Kurt, speaking at the ceremony. "Hacire wasn't just my sister; she was my comrade."

The funeral ceremony ended the sound of the slogan: "martyrs never die."
