ISTANBUL – On the 20th anniversary of the Saturday Mothers' May 27, 1995 action to demand justice for the disappeared yesterday, the group—still calling for the trial of those who disappeared and killed their loved ones—held a 20th anniversary action.
The first Saturday Mothers action took place at Istanbul's Galatasaray Square, where they asked in 1995: "Where are the missing? Where is justice?" 20 years after the first Saturday Mothers action, there have been just five trials of those suspected in the so-called "unknown perpetrator" killings and forced disappearances that were widespread in the 1980s and 1990s in Turkey.
Yesterday, the group scattered the unlaced shoes that are the symbol of the disappeared outside of Çağlayan Courthouse. The shoelaces were the first thing to go missing when individuals were arrested. The group planned a second 20th anniversary rally for the evening yesterday in Galatasary Square.
