NEWS CENTER – The Catalan women's movement Vaga de Totes held a consumer strike on Tuesday to protest the unpaid labor and role of consumer that capitalism pushes on women.
Vaga de Totes, a movement comprised of hundreds of women's groups in Catalonia, has been working since March 2014 to organize general strikes and consciousness-raising actions by women in the Catalan countries. The Vaga de Totes movement rejects the traditional idea of a strike by the implicitly male, white wage laborer and has organized a number of women's strikes in Catalan cities over the past year.
On Tuesday, the group called a women's strike against consumerism and housework, holding actions in several Catalan cities. Women, chanting slogans like "Manolo, you will make your own dinner tonight," marched through supermarkets in Girona and high street shops in Barcelona. The women, who turned their aprons into protest signs and their brooms into symbols of the strike, threw purple paint bombs at shops that remained open on Barcelona's high street. Women wrote slogans like "aesthetic pressure is violence" across the windows of the luxury shops and shut down traffic in several locations.
