NEWS CENTER – ArunaShanbaug, who has spent the last 42 years of her life in a coma after a rape and murder attempt in 1973, passed away on Monday in Mumbai.

Aruna had been struggling with pneumonia for several days. ArunaShanbaug came from the state of Karnata to Mumbai to work in a hospital in the 1970s. On November 27, 1973, the cleaning worker at the hospital where she worked, SohanlalValmiki, raped Aruna (then 25) and abandoned her to death. The man was never charged for rape, serving just seven years for "attempted murder."
