HESEKÊ – Women members of the traffic police in the Rojava city of Hesekê say that their work shows that women can run society.
Îman Eswed is a member of the traffic police force organized in Hesekê a year ago as part of the democratic autonomous government of the city. She works from the early hour to direct traffic, issue tickets to drivers without licenses and perform routine peacekeeping duties in the city, which was recently the target of a Daesh bomb attack targeting a civilian Newroz celebration in March.
“By taking part in political, military and government life, we show that women can run society,” says Îman. She says institutions like this have broken the bonds of conservatism in Rojava that once confined women to the home.
