GIRKÊ LEGÊ – Rojava artist Cengê Serhildan has set out to give a new voice to women’s life in Kurdistan with her songs.

Cengê lives in the village of Sermesax, near Girkê Legê in the eastern part of Rojava Kurdistan. She says that although there have been many obstacles in the way of her pursuing her art, she worked for seven years to obtain an education in Kurdish music. Cengê had to hide her pursuit of art, supported only by her mother.

She says that with the Rojava revolution “everything changed” as society in Rojava underwent immense shifts in the wake of the revolution. Now, Cengê is a trained singer. She says she hopes to keep the musical legacy of the village of Sermesax alive with her art.
