KELAR – An 18-year-old woman in the town of Kelar, near the city of Sulaimaniyah in Southern Kurdistan, lost her life in the hospital after attempting to commit suicide. She set herself on fire when she was no longer able to bear her husband’s abuse.

Women in Sulaimaniyah have lately been protesting the epidemic of women’s suicides in the area and calling on the Federal Kurdistan Government to take action against domestic violence and femicide.

According to Rojnews, the young woman was a student in the Arabic Language and Literature Department of Germiyan University. She was married against her will and soon after she married began to be abused by her husband. When she attempted to move back in with her family, they rejected her and sent her back to her husband.

Hospital staff were unable to save her life when she was brought to the hospital after allegedly attempting to kill herself.
