QAMIŞLO – Women in the Rojava city of Qamişlo celebrated the opening of two women's communes in the city.
In the city of Qamişlo, located in the Cizîrê Canton of Rojava, women have opened the communes named Şehit Emine and Şehit Hebûn, after two women who lost their lives defending the revolution. The communes are located in the Qenetsiwes neighborhood of the city and have been organized by the woman's organization Yekîtiya Star. Women from the two communes held an opening today where they voted for the leadership of the new communes.
"Communes are an expression of women's willpower," said Firyal Mehemet Hesen, of Yekîtiya Star. "In revolutions throughout history, women have been held back, but with the Rojava revolution, women have come to know their rights and to bring out their own willpower." The communes will have assemblies where women will work to solve their own problems related to health, education and economic issues.
Ruken Ahmed, discussing the opening of the Şehit Hebûn Commune, said that the commune project had fallen by the wayside recently, but that with the new election, women were planning to make the commune a more active and effective form.
"Re-founding the communes was very important to us," she said.
