WAN – As women in the Northern Kurdish city of Van continue their month-long campaign against violence against women, the Congress of Free Women (KJA) has decided to form a standing committee against violence against women.

The consciousness-raising campaign started on April 1, with the slogan "women are organizing life and building a moral-political society." Women started the campaign in response to the high rate of violence against women in the province, which has seen little intervention from the Turkish state. Suicides by women tormented by their husbands and male family members are a common reality in the province.

The new committee will hold a two-day training session on dealing with women's suicides, according to sociologist RüyaKanat of the Rojîn Women's Life Center, located in the city center. Rüya said that the network of women's information centers needs strengthening in the province, where in the absence of local women centers, women come to Rojîn in the city center, resulting in an influx of demand.

The new committee, with five members from every town in Van province, will attempt to be a lasting answer to the demand for aid and solidarity against violence in the region.
