COLEMÊRG – Over 10 thousand people in Hakkari joined in laying to rest YJA-Star guerrilla Gurbet Çiftçi (nom de guerre Bêrîvan Çarçela).
Gurbet lost her life in Shengal fighting Daesh gangs. Women shouldered her coffin at the funeral in her native eastern province of Hakkari, shouting "long live Apo" (referring to the jailed PKK leader), "Kurdistan will be ISIS' grave," and "martyrs never die."
After the march reached Serê Solan Martyrs' Cemetery, participants held a moment of silence to honor all those who lost their lives in the struggle of freedom and democracy. They sang the Kurdish national march "Çerxa Şoreşê."
"Comrade Bêrîvan rejected the current unfair system and struggled against the tyranny against the Kurdish people," said HDP Provincial Co-Chair Rahmi Temel. "She was immortalized in Shengal.
Among those present were Party of Democratic Regions (DBP) and Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), MEYA-DER executives, Hakkari co-mayors, Hakkari University students and Peace Mothers Assembly members. Marchers bore the flags of PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party), YJA-Star, KCK, and posters of PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan and YJA-Star guerrilla Çiftçi. Afterward, the crowd visited a tent for condolences for Gurbet's family in the village of Bayê.
