Female lawyers: ‘Our struggle against violence will continue’

RIHA – Women’s Rights Commission of Urfa Bar released Turkey’s violence report and said their struggle would continue until violence against women was ended.

Women’s Rights Commission of Urfa Bar issued a press statement in front of the Courthouse on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25. Dilara İnan read the statement on behalf of female lawyers. Dilara stated that their struggle would continue until violence against women was ended. Dilara gave the following information on violence against women:

“Turkey, where 49, 8 percent of the population is women, ranked on the 130th among 145 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index released by the World Economic Forum. According to data of We Will Stop Femicide Platform, 303 women were killed in 2015. Men killed 236 women sexually assaulted 71 women and sexually abused 368 girls in 11 months of 2016.

‘Turkey is extremely scary’

Dilara indicated that regulations were made to justify sexual abuse and said, “This situation is very scary for Turkey and we, as lawyers, are worried about that. At the point when the society doesn’t obey the law and the laws don’t provide that, adapting laws to the society has no legal grounds. The current situation in Turkey is extremely worrying. Our struggle will continue until violence against women is ended.”
